I have often been asked, ‘how do you create a picture?’ So I have designed this page to illustrate how a pyrograph is completed from start to finish. Firstly, the image is transfered onto the wood, I like to include where the shadows and highlights will occur. This helps at a later stage when adding tones.
I then burn where the darkest areas will be, this is shown in the second picture. I always put the eye in first as it makes the picture ‘come alive’, and I get more confidence in completing the picture if this is successful!

I then continue, building up the pyrograph adding mid tones. The highlights for this piece were done by using the natural colour of the wood. Finally, the fine detailed lines of the mane and tail are added. The finished piece was completed with a quick drying matt varnish and placed in a picture frame.
